FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE—-Michigan-based self-taught artist Chris Roberts-Antieau is returning to her roots and is opening a pop-up gallery in downtown Ann Arbor. The gallery will bear the same name as Antieau’s New Orleans gallery, Antieau Gallery, and will be located at 211 S. 4th Ave., a Shaffran Company property. The 4th Ave. gallery will be open from November 9 through December 1, 2012, 11 am to 9 pm everyday.

Antieau, who has exhibited at the Ann Arbor Street Art Fair for over 20 years, is hopeful that the Ann Arbor gallery will be received as well as her New Orleans location was over two years ago. What also began as a month-long pop-up gallery following the 2010 Jazz Festival, Antieau Gallery – New Orleans had a hugely successful debut and is now a staple in the French Quarter at 927 Royal Street.

Pop-up galleries began gaining popularity years ago in New York and have proven to be mutually beneficial for artists, landlords and communities as a whole. Artists are able to occupy vacant spaces for little to no rent, display their art, and bring culture and life to a community, revitalizing entire areas of town. Antieau has visions of creating a “gallery row” in Ann Arbor and is optimistic that this pop-up gallery will generate the energy and support needed to not only allow Antieau to create a permanent gallery space in Ann Arbor, but will attract other artists to do the same.

Antieau’s art is composed of carefully-cut pieces of fabric which are fused, sewn together, and displayed in hand-painted frames. Antieau Gallery – Ann Arbor will host it’s initial opening on November 10, 2012 from 6-10 pm and will also have a number of events through the month of November, culminating with Midnight Madness on November 30, 2012. For more information on upcoming events, follow Chris Roberts-Antieau on Facebook and Twitter.

Bill Clinton Loves Chris-Roberts-Antieau’s Artwork!

Bill Clinton buys work by local artist Chris Roberts-Antieau

Chris Roberts-Antieau has a substantial national reputation—her artwork has hung in the White House, been featured in national magazines, and been purchased by celebrities. She’s also been the subject of a documentary movie.

Now the profile of the Manchester fabric artist is rising again, this time by attracting the attention—and the buying power—of former President Bill Clinton.

Roberts-Antieau lives and works in Manchester, but she has a gallery in New Orleans. According to a press release from the artist’s studio, Clinton was in New Orleans for a small-business conference earlier this week. Just after giving a speech he stopped at the gallery, located at 927 Royal Street in the French Quarter.

While at the gallery, Clinton bought two piecse by Roberts-Antieau, “Cat with Butterflies” and “Cat Hugger,” as well as a piece by one of the gallery’s other featured artists, Bryan Cunningham.

Roberts-Antieau uses meticulously cut scraps of cloth to create “fabric pictures,” which she showcases in handpainted frames. She got her start at the Ann Arbor Street Art Fair in 1988 and continues to exhibit in the fair—which was just named among the top 10 in the country.

For more information, see the artist’s website.
